As another who is looking to purchase their first horse after *years* of riding others' let me say that you really want to save up and invest in a quality horse - especially if you are showing.
A lot of the ';cheap'; horses out there are green broke, have very little training, health problems and/or bad stable vices. I've been looking around for several months now and have yet to find a ';cheap'; horse that is worth the investment I would have to put into it via training, vet expenses, etc.
Spend a little more on the horse itself and save in the long run. And talk to those in your circuit - other show people, the stables, etc. My trainer has helped me *tremendously* in searching for a good mount. Can somebody give me websites for Horses For Sale at low sale prices? I'm looking for a good horse tha's cheap
it depends on the area that you live in. Good general sites are www.equine.com or www.dreamhorse.com . If possible I would contact your local ASPCA because they will sometimes get in horses whose owners can no longer take care of them. If you have a riding instructor or an experianced horse person, you could try an auction, but they are not recomended as a good place to buy your first horse. I would have that be your last option and again, be sure to bring someone who is very experianced with buying horses at auction.
www.equinehits.com
great site
i swear by it
This might not be the answer you were looking for but it is important for first time horse owners. Horses are one of those purchases where you really do get what you pay for. I don't know what your definition of cheap is but you are better off saving your money for a little while longer and paying a little more for a quality animal. You don't have to spend a fortune but you shouldn't go for the bargain either, you will be disappointed.
ask you local equine vet or ask at the local feed store these 2 usually know of any horses that are for sale.
A cheap horse will cost you more in vet bills then it's worth. Horse care is very expensive, if you can't buy one you probably can't afford upkeep. As a new horse lover try to lease on for awhile. Ity's better to keep them out of auctions, wouldn't want a pet to become a purse would you?
Try http://www.petfinder.com They even have horses for adoption. Do a pet search on the left side of the page.
Can you afford to keep the horse after you purchase it.
Paying for the horse itself is the cheap part. The feed and boarding and vet bills and care is the expensive part of horse ownership.
Id you have a human society in your area sometimes they have horses who need to be adopted. Local classified ads may have something.
Most horses on the web are pretty pricey and if you can find someting in your area it would be better not to have to ship it. Shipping a horse is very expensive.
