What does Private Treaty mean either on a horse for sale or a stallions stud fee?

I hate seeing ';private treaty'; on ads! I'm someone who likes a firm, written price and therefore any ad with private treaty makes me uncomfortable.

But what does it mean?

It means there is flexibility on price depending on circumstances. For example, a stallion owner may give a discount breeding to a mare with an exception show record. I have seen ads where stallion owners offer FREE!!! breeding to a mare with a world show win record to their young stallion. Why? Because the chance of having a top quality foal is there then, and that is good advertising for their program. In a similiar way, stallion owners will offer other discounts for various reasons. Perhaps they'll give you money off if you bring two mares to them that year, perhaps they'll give you a discount if your mare has other qualities they desire.

Likewise, some people will sell a horse for a slightly lower price if it goes to a home that they consider very desirable. A breeder who is trying to raise top quality show horses may sell a young horse for a lower price to someone who is already showing successfully on their breed circuit.

This isn't out of kindness, but because they hope that the new owner will have the ability and knowlege to take the horse to the top of the show world, and that will reflect well on their breeding program.

Hope that helps. What does Private Treaty mean either on a horse for sale or a stallions stud fee?
It means that the fee is at the discretion of the stallion owner and when they are private treaty, they are usually quite picky about what mares they will accept to be bred and also the fees is usually really high. For example , Saddlers Wells breeding fee is private treaty but rumored to be around $300,000. As the stallion gets older, they will limit numbers booked and if it's a top sire, they can then afford to set the price as they wish and accept or decline mares upon what they wish to produce.

Sales are basically the same, it's between you and the owner and the price is not just put out there. Serious buyers only. What does Private Treaty mean either on a horse for sale or a stallions stud fee?
';Private Treaty'; for Stud Service means it depends on the quality of the mare(s) you want to breed. The stallion owner is generally more interested in producing top quality foals than just making money.

For Sale by ';Private Treaty'; means the seller wants a particular type of buyer. A breeder or trainer will do this because they do not want the horse standing in someones backyard, they want it out competing and being seen.
Ditto to everyone.. I hate seeing ';Privete Treaty'; to me it means the price is to big to put in that spot!
